Using Scratch
For
this week’s assignment, we started utilizing a web-based program called
Scratch. This was a neat assignment where we got to lay out some small
programming information to make something come to life. In this assignment, I
will explain my experience, difficulties, and insights while using
scratch.
My experience using scratch was very positive. I watched the intro
video on how it worked and hopped right into making my program. It is very
intuitive and well laid out, so you can go right to work after watching the
how-to. The possibilities that you have with this program are very extensive,
with all the different options for commands at your fingertips.
I
personally only had one or two difficulties with the program. The animation for
steps did not want to work right on the build screen, but after you made the
script, it seemed to flow for me. The other difficulty I had that I cleared up
was when I went to save my work, I did not realize you had to make an account.
That was easily remedied as I created the account and was able to save and
share my work.
As far as insights that I gained while using Scratch, one comes to
mind, and it is how the program gives the user the ability to make the story as
they see fit. That is what is cool about programming and how it is utilized. I
recently took a Python class, which was much simpler than that, but I
appreciated the simplicity after using Python. Scratch was a very simple
program to use. Python has all these intricate built-in functions versus
Scratch which you just click and drag and type what you want it to say. Python,
to me, has more rewards once completed because you must put a lot more effort
into the project.
Between the two languages, I would say that Scratch was most
definitely easier to use and understand from the start. I struggled with Python
in the beginning but eventually caught on and was able to succeed. I think
Python would be more effective in the long run, mostly because I hear about it
so much in the real world. This was the first time I had heard of Scratch and
was able to use it. I think Python is more popular based on what I mentioned
above, plus all the real-world equations that can be calculated utilizing that
program. I may be biased since I had an entire class dedicated to the subject.
In
conclusion, this was a fun assignment, and I learned a lot about the program
Scratch. I also was able to compare the two different programs, Scratch and
Python. In this assignment, I was able to explain my experience, difficulties, and
insights that I had while using scratch.
